Q: What does ‘competency based’ mean?
A: Competency-based education focuses more on praxis and application than on classroom time.
How does it work?
JCSTS' new model focuses on 15 core competencies. Individual courses are designed to meet one or more of these competencies. Built into each course are learning activities and assessment tools that a learner (student) can complete on her/his own time frame for up to one year from the start date.
The goal is for a learner to complete all assessments successfully, thus demonstrating mastery of a specific competency. All courses are pass/fail; no grades are offered.
